No Need To Wait For a Beautiful Smile

A smile before and after teeth whitening

One of the cornerstones of an attractive smile is white teeth. Unfortunately, it’s nearly impossible to avoid staining and discoloration over time, even for people who were born with a naturally white smile. At Bluff Creek Dental, one of our most popular procedures is teeth whitening from our Edmond, OK cosmetic dentist because it provides fantastic results incredibly quickly. If you’re interested in making a big change to your appearance in just a short amount of time, contact us today to schedule a consultation with Dr. Crowley.

How Do Teeth Become Stained or Discolored?

Everyone’s teeth become discolored with age because the enamel naturally gets thinner and exposes the darker layer of tooth structure underneath. But there are many other reasons for teeth stains, including:

  • Poor brushing and flossing habits
  • Genetics
  • Tobacco use
  • Red wine, coffee, and tea
  • Blunt force trauma that damages the blood supply of a tooth, causing it to turn dark grey in color
  • Developmental defects in the enamel
  • Taking tetracycline (an antibiotic) in childhood or certain antihistamines and antidepressants

While you don’t have control over all of these factors, you can take steps to minimize stains and discoloration by getting regular professional cleanings, doing well with oral hygiene at home, and not smoking. Also, if you consume coffee, tea, or red wine, swish with water several times afterward and use a whitening toothpaste to remove surface stains.
