Adjusting to Invisalign & How to Stay Comfortable
July 5, 2025

If you’ve recently started Invisalign treatment, you’re well on your way to a straighter, healthier smile. But while the aligners are designed to be smooth and comfortable, it’s completely normal to experience some slight discomfort as your mouth adjusts. This is usually a sign that your aligners are doing their job to gently shift your teeth into their new positions; however, adjusting to it isn’t always easy! Here’s a little more about why this discomfort occurs in the first place, along with what you can do to find some much-needed relief.
Why Invisalign May Feel Uncomfortable at First
When you first put in a new set of Invisalign aligners, you may notice mild pressure or tenderness around your teeth and gums. This sensation typically lasts only a few days and tends to lessen as your mouth adjusts to wearing them. Unlike traditional braces, Invisalign doesn’t have wires or brackets that can irritate, but the snug fit can still feel a little unusual at first. Patients tend to notice this discomfort the most at the very beginning of their Invisalign journey, as well as each time they advance to a new set of trays.
Tips for Relieving Invisalign Discomfort
Fortunately, there are several ways of easing the adjustment period while keeping your treatment as comfortable and on schedule as possible:
- Apply a cold compress – A cooling pack (or frozen bag of vegetables) placed on the outside of your mouth can help soothe tenderness.
- Use over-the-counter pain relievers – Medications such as ibuprofen can help to reduce soreness if needed.
- Use orthodontic wax – While this is more commonly used to help ease discomfort associated with metal braces, it can still be applied to problematic areas of your aligners.
- Stick to soft foods – Eating smoothies, yogurt, soups, and other easy-to-eat foods during the first couple of days can serve to give your teeth a break.
- Switch aligners at night – Starting a new set of aligners before bed allows you to sleep through the first few hours, when there tends to be the most pressure.
Remember, any initial discomfort from Invisalign is usually temporary, and most patients find that it becomes less and less noticeable with each new set of aligners. That said, if your soreness lasts longer than a few days or feels severe, don’t hesitate to let your provider know so that they can make sure your treatment is progressing as it should!
