What to Do After Losing a Dental Crown
June 2, 2025

Dental restorations like crowns are designed to mimic your natural tooth structure as much as possible. So they’re definitely not supposed to fall out of your mouth!
If your crown comes loose, it is considered a dental emergency, but try not to panic. Your emergency dentist in Edmond will be able to provide swift assistance, and your smile will be good as new in no time. Simply follow these steps and let your dental care team take care of the rest!
First: Call Your Emergency Dentist in Edmond
Your trusty emergency dentist can provide first-aid guidance over the phone if necessary, so it’s a good idea to make contacting them your first step. They’ll also help you book the earliest available appointment and might even be able to see you on the same day. After your call, you’re bound to have more peace of mind!
Next: Try to Locate Your Crown
Finding your wayward crown isn’t always easy. Sometimes it’s actually impossible because the patient has accidentally swallowed it. Fortunately, if this is the case, you shouldn’t encounter any complications (you will absolutely need a replacement crown, though!).
If you do manage to find your crown, store it in a secure container, placing it somewhere you won’t forget it. Your dentist may be able to recement it at your emergency appointment, or, if they confirm it’s safe for you to do so, you can try recementing it yourself.
Optional: Temporarily “Re-Crowning” Your Tooth
Understandably, you might not want to make this attempt if you’re squeamish. But if you’re feeling confident and think you know how your crown should sit on your tooth, then clean it thoroughly and squirt a small dab of toothpaste on the underside. Line your crown up with your tooth, then press it down gently but firmly. As long as you don’t touch it, it should stay in place until your dentist can provide a more long-term solution.
Last but Least: Receive Treatment
Even after successfully “re-crowning” your tooth, you should plan to show up for your emergency appointment on time. You’ll check in at the front desk like you normally would, and your dentist will show you to the treatment room ASAP. Once you’re settled in the patient’s chair, relax and let your dentist take care of the rest.
Losing dental work that’s meant to be fixed in place can be alarming to say the least. Thankfully, you have a reliable and compassionate dental team ready to back you up at a moment’s notice. Explain your situation in as much detail as possible, then take a deep breath. Your crown will be restored in the blink of an eye!
