As\nfrightening as that may sound, oral cancer usually isn\u2019t a death sentence. The\nmost important way to treat it is to get an early diagnosis from your dentist\nin OKC. Keep reading to learn more about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patrickcrowleydds.com\/preventive-dentistry.html\">oral cancer<\/a>\nand what you can do to prevent it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Can Oral Cancer Develop?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Oral cancer begins when cells in the mouth or on the lips\ndevelop mutations in their DNA. These mutations tell the cells to continue\ngrowing whereas healthy cells would die. It\u2019s not clear what exactly causes\nthose cell mutations, but they can lead to dangerous problems if left\nuntreated. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Are the Dangers of Oral Cancer?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the National Cancer Institute, 60 percent of\nall people with oral cancer will survive for 5 years or more. The earlier the\ndiagnosis, the higher chance of survival. For stage 1 and 2 oral cancers, where\nthe tumor has not spread to the lymph nodes or other parts of the body, 70 to\n90 percent of people survive. Early diagnosis is the best way to ensure that\nthe cancer does not spread and become fatal. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Are the Symptoms of Oral Cancer?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you experience any of these symptoms for a prolonged\nperiod of time, contact your dentist immediately:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>A sore on your lip or mouth that won\u2019t heal <\/li><li>Pain or difficulty swallowing<\/li><li>Bleeding from your mouth <\/li><li>Loose teeth <\/li><li>A lump in your neck<\/li><li>Earache that won\u2019t subside<\/li><li>Sore throat <\/li><li>Jaw pain or stiffness <\/li><li>Tongue pain <\/li><li>Dramatic weight loss <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some of these symptoms may be indicative of other diseases.\nHowever, it never hurts to visit your dentist so they can conduct a full\nexamination of your mouth to rule out oral cancer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Can I Prevent Oral Cancer?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is no surefire way to prevent mouth cancer, but there\nare a few things you can do to lower your risk:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Don\u2019t use tobacco products. <\/strong>Smoking or\nchewing tobacco exposes your mouth to many different carcinogens, or\ncancer-causing chemicals. <\/li><li><strong>Limit alcohol consumption. <\/strong>Frequent and\nexcessive alcohol use can irritate the cells in your mouth and make them more\nvulnerable to oral cancer. If you choose to drink, do so in moderation. Try to\nnot have more than two drinks a day. <\/li><li><strong>Protect your lips from the sun. <\/strong>Stay in\nthe shade as much as possible to protect your lips from sun damage. If you\u2019re\ngoing to be spending time in the sun, wear a hat with a broad brim that shades\nyour entire face, including your mouth. In addition, wear a sunscreen lip balm.<\/li><li><strong>Visit your dentist at least twice a year. <\/strong>At\nyour next checkup, ask your dentist to inspect your entire mouth for areas that\nlook abnormal and may be a sign of cancer.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If all of this sounds scary, it\u2019s because it easily can be.\nHowever, prevention and early diagnosis is the best treatment.
