Keep reading more to find out what an emergency\nvisit will include and what kind of treatment options you may have. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Happens At an Emergency Visit? <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>After you\u2019ve discussed your symptoms with an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patrickcrowleydds.com\/emergency-dentistry.html\">emergency\ndentist<\/a>, your visit will likely include the following: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>A visual\nexam<\/strong> \u2013 A dentist will begin by visually inspecting your teeth and gums to\nget an overall idea of what\u2019s happened and how to proceed. <\/li><li><strong>X-rays<\/strong>\n\u2013 X-rays allow a dentist to see what they can\u2019t see with the naked eye alone.\nThese images tell them what\u2019s happening around the roots and nerves of your\nteeth as well as in the jawbone.<\/li><li><strong>Photographs<\/strong>\n\u2013 A dentist may use a small intraoral camera to take up-close photographs of\nyour teeth. This is a great way to document any damage that\u2019s occurred and help\nyou better understand your treatment recommendations. <\/li><li><strong>Discussion\nof treatment options<\/strong> \u2013 Finally, using all the information they\u2019ve gathered\nduring their exam, a dentist will discuss their diagnosis and recommendations for\ntreatment.&nbsp; <\/li><li><strong>Prescription\nfor antibiotics if an infection is present<\/strong> \u2013 If you have a toothache and\/or\nswelling, you may have an infection. This can spread to other areas of the body\nand become very dangerous if it\u2019s not addressed immediately, so a dentist will\ntypically prescribe antibiotics right away before treating the tooth itself. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Kind of Treatment Will You Need? <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Every situation is unique, so your treatment will depend on\nthe cause and severity of your emergency. Here are some possibilities for\nseveral common emergencies: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Toothache<\/strong> \u2013 After an infection has either been ruled out or treated with antibiotics, a toothache is often treated with a filling, dental crown. If the nerve of the tooth is damaged, a root canal may be necessary to save the tooth.&nbsp; <\/li><li><strong>Knocked-out tooth<\/strong> \u2013 For a knocked-out tooth, it\u2019s important that you\u2019re seen within an hour or so, and that you handle the tooth correctly (only touching the crown, not the root, gently rinsing the tooth off, and either putting it back in its socket or in a glass of water or milk). If the tooth can be saved, a dentist will do so. If not, they\u2019ll clean the area and stop any bleeding. After you\u2019ve healed you can return to discuss replacement options. <\/li><li><strong>Broken tooth or filling<\/strong> \u2013 If you break or chip a tooth, a dentist can usually repair it with either a filling or dental crown. If the break involves the nerve, a root canal may also be recommended. Severely broken teeth may need to be extracted.&nbsp; <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In any emergency, the goal is to stabilize you as soon as possible and also make sure you have a healthy smile in the future.
